Bend, Oregon

Bend is the largest city in Deschutes County, Oregon. The name Bend was derived from "Farewell Bend," the designation used by early pioneers who forded the Deschutes River at the "bend" as they departed to parts farther west. A small community developed around this bend in the river and when they applied for a post office shortly after the turn of the 20th century, they discovered the name "Farwell Bend" was already taken. City fathers then shortened the name to "Bend" and the city was incorporated in 1905 with a population of 300. Bend has now grown to over 75,000 as of 2007, but lives much larger as a recreational mecca for young and old.
